Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Abnormal periods are usually the first sign that there is something wrong with the reproductive system. Usually periods will occur every 21-35 days, last 2-7 days with bleeding less than 80 ml per cycle.
It is the heavier, prolonged or more frequent periods which are more alarming. There could be a number of causes behind it- Adenomyosis, Uterine polyps, Cervical growths, Fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia, uterine malignancies, and the list goes on.
Hysterectomy is the final line of treatment of women suffering from abnormal bleeding or tumors of uterus/cervix (non-cancerous) and not responding well to medications and non surgical treatments. The uterus and cervix are removed by 4-5 tiny incisions over the abdomen. Recovery is usually fast, most women feel strong enough to move about within few hours. Tiny incisions reduce the risk of surgical site infection, blood loss, post operative pain and hasten recovery in general.
Contrary to perception, Laparoscopic hysterectomy is as efficient as open or vaginal hysterectomy and doesn’t mean higher complication rates.
The greatest factor which influences success of surgery is careful patient selection. Women who suffer from menstrual or pelvic complaints, have a definite diagnosis as to cause of complaints and do not desire childbearing, are the ideal candidates. of course, this is a general categorization and every patient’s treatment is tailored to her medical/surgical profile and her own acceptance of treatment.
