Self Managed Abortion: A dangerous path

India is a country with one of the most liberal abortion laws. It enables women to terminate pregnancies up to 24 weeks legally. Medical abortion (termination of pregnancy with oral medication) is permitted up to 7 weeks. MTP medications are highly regulated by the Government of India, and justifiably so. When used wrongly, consequences can be catastrophic.

The MTP pills are ideally available only on prescription of an RMP (Registered Medical Practitioner), who will prescribe it after examining the patient to:

  • Determine exact gestational age

  • Rule out an ectopic pregnancy (by ultrasound)

Unfortunately, despite strict regulations, MTP pills are often available over-the-counter. These are taken by women without consulting a physician and can lead to various complications like:

  • Cramps

  • Hemorrhage

  • Ruptured ectopic

  • Shock & Death

If you are pregnant and do not wish to continue the pregnancy,

  • See your gynaecologist at the earliest. The higher the duration of pregnancy, the greater are risks of termination.

  • Do not refuse ultrasound, it can save your life.

  • Do not self medicate or have pregnancy terminated by a non qualified person.

  • Let your doctor decide the safest mode of termination.
