Are intimate hygiene products useful?

In the past decade, there has been a boom of intimate hygiene products. With high visibility and celebrity endorsements, they have become common in every household. Here’s what we need to know about this new trend.

  • Vagina is self cleansing

  • Vaginal discharge is not always a sign of disease. Often, it’s physiological

  • Vaginal flora maintain it’s pH between 3.8 & 4.5 (acidic)

  • Some types of bacteria are normally present in vagina and are protective.

What do vaginal douches, cleansers, sprays and gels do?

  • Tend to promote false ideas about how female genitalia should look or smell

  • May cause skin irritation

  • Affect normal flora

  • Could make you prone to infections.
