Vaccination in Pregnancy

Advent of vaccines is probably the biggest landmark in healthcare. It drastically reduced mortality from so many diseases. Pregnancy is a state of naturally low immunity and few vaccines have been recommended based on Indian data in pregnant women.

  • Tetanus Toxoid: Given in 1 or 2 doses, 1 month apart. Prevents tetanus in mother and baby.

  • Flu vaccine: Given as a single dose. Prevents serious forms of influenza infection and complications

  • DPT vaccine: Recent recommendation. Given in place of third dose of tetanus toxoid. Protects baby from respiratory illness in first few weeks of life.

  • COVID vaccine: Both Covishield and Covaxin are approved in pregnant women. Given as 2 doses 3 months apart
